During law school at Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis, Mr. Roberts was one of the original founders of "The Dictum" newspaper which is still published today. Upon graduation in 1973, he was immediately hired as a trial attorney for the Federal Power Commission in Washington, D.C. He later moved back to Indianapolis to start his private practice and became a Public Defender for Marion County.
He is one of the few lawyers in the State that was death penalty certified. In 1977, he was invited to Dearborn, Michigan by Ford Motor Company. That same year, he was requested to try a case for Ford Motor Company. He obtained a defense verdict and has remained as one Ford's Outside Counsel ever since.
Mr. Roberts appeared in the Indiana Appellate Courts for Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation. When Tandem computers needed counsel in a neighboring jurisdiction, Mr. Roberts was hired to go to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Firm has represented General Motors Corporation in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and prevailed.
Mr. Roberts lectured to various corporate HR Departments relative to employment matters. He wrote more than 100 briefs in his career and tried over 102 cases before juries in Federal and State Courts. Mr. Roberts is a former Treasurer of the Marion County Democratic Party and served as legal counsel to the Democratic members of Indianapolis, Marion County and the City County Council. Mr. Roberts is a co-founder of the National Bar Association's Commercial Law Section and former Chairman. He is also a co-founding member of the National Minority Legal Group (NMLG).
He is the author of "Never Too Small". He was lifetime member of the National Bar Association and NAACP. Mr. Roberts retired after practicing more than 42 years.
